About the job:

About the course:

As a Psychiatrist, you will first have to complete your MBBS, followed by an M.D. in Psychiatry. Thus, 7.5 years of study (5.5 years of MBBS + 2 years of M.D.) are required

If you choose to train as a psychologist, your entire university education will be spent learning about mental health for 5-7 years, followed by supervised internships.

Difference between Psychologist and psychiatrist :

A master’s degree in psychology does not qualify a person as a doctor or psychiatrist. A Master’s degree in psychology does not mean that you went to medical school. A psychiatrist does qualify as an MBBS, and an MBBS qualifies you for a Ph.D. in psychiatry.

Not everyone who studies psychologist ends up working as psychology, but a Ph.D. in a psychiatrist or a psychology degree is a perfect way. Psychiatry can open many doors and pave the way for a wide range of career opportunities in the field of the mental health field.

Psychiatrists can prescribe medicines, and psychologists can’t. Psychiatrists can diagnose an illness or diseases and manage treatment and provide a range of therapies for complex and severe mental illness. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients.

Psychologists may be better placed merely because of the sub-disciplines they input, but becoming a psychiatrist offers a better career reward. The ideal career opportunity that psychologists might consider does not require a license.

Alternative course:

Another option for those who need to qualify as a psychiatrist is a diploma in Psychiatric Medicine (DPM) at a recognized educational institution. You could also complete a four-year postgraduate course in psychiatry at a recognized educational institution before qualifying as a psychiatrist. Successful graduates of this course are hired as psychiatrists in hospitals, clinics, and other mental health institutions in India. You can complete a two-year training in a psychiatric hospital or a private hospital in the country or another country. 

Scope:
